How GloGerm MIST Simulates Airborne Contamination
When we think about germ spread, we usually picture contaminated hands and dirty surfaces. But some of the most dangerous pathogens travel through the air — carried by coughs, sneezes, and even normal breathing. The challenge for trainers has always been the same: how do you show people something they cannot see?
GloGerm MIST was designed to solve exactly that problem. It produces a fine, fluorescent mist that behaves like real airborne particles, settling on surfaces, clothing, and skin in the same patterns that respiratory droplets follow. Under UV light, the invisible becomes visible — and the results are often startling.
How MIST Works
The MIST canister releases a non-aerosol spray of micro-fine fluorescent particles. Unlike traditional GloGerm Gel or Oil, which you apply directly to hands and surfaces, MIST is designed to travel through the air before settling. This makes it ideal for demonstrating respiratory hygiene, cough etiquette, and the reach of airborne contamination.
A single spray in a room can deposit particles on surfaces several metres away. When you turn on a UV light, participants can see exactly where those particles landed — on desks, keyboards, faces, and clothing they assumed were clean.
Training Scenarios
- Cough and sneeze etiquette: Spray MIST while simulating a cough without covering, then compare the spread pattern when using an elbow or tissue
- PPE effectiveness: Show how masks and face shields reduce particle spread by running the demo with and without protection
- Room ventilation awareness: Demonstrate how particles settle differently in well-ventilated versus enclosed spaces
- Patient isolation protocols: Reveal how contamination escapes isolation rooms through door openings and clothing
Why It Matters More Than Ever
Respiratory illness outbreaks have reinforced what infection control professionals have always known: airborne transmission is a significant vector that demands proper training. Traditional slide presentations tell staff the facts, but GloGerm MIST shows them the reality. The difference in retention and behaviour change is measurable.
Healthcare facilities, schools, and food processing plants that incorporate MIST into their training programs report that staff take respiratory hygiene protocols more seriously after seeing the demonstration firsthand.
Getting Started
The easiest way to run a MIST demonstration is with the MIST Kit Basic, which includes the MIST canister, an 8 oz refill bottle, and a UV flashlight. For facilities that need the full range of infection control training tools, the HAZMAT Kit includes MIST alongside gels, powders, and the Surface Cleaning Detection Gel.
For a complete walkthrough of how to set up and run the demonstration, visit our Training Resources page or download the Trainer's Manual included with every kit.
